Dell Dimension 3000 Reinstall - 2007/07/09 16:35 Hi,

I have been trying to do a clean reinstall of Windows XP to my girlfriend's computer and can't seem to format the hard drive. I've done it before on my laptop (which I'm on now) and it seemed to work OK. Would it be because I'm not using a real Windows disk? I think it's still legitimate as even though I downloaded it, I'm going to use the real key from the side of her PC... (Please let me know if you're not allowed to do this though!)

It's taking me to a screen (I think it's called BIOS) that's like DOS used to look like, if you remember that?! It seems to be ok until it asks which part of the drive to install to; I can't format the hard disk, only delete the existing copy of Windows and reinstall, but not remove the entire contents of the drive.

Help please?!?!

Re:Dell Dimension 3000 Reinstall - 2007/07/09 16:41 Hi Dave,

Be careful using downloaded software, you don't always know what you're getting. It's a grey area whether it's legal download copies of Windows for use with a licensed key. it's always best to use a legitimate disc to install from to make sure you stay legal.

What make and model is the PC? Often more recent computers will come with a "Restore Partition" on the hard disk where you can reset the computer to it's factory settings without using a disk.
